Adult Reef Swim Cover-Up Free Digital Sewing Pattern Sizes S-XL

Samantha Stolinski·June 28, 2024
Adult Reef Swim Cover-Up Free Digital Sewing Pattern Sizes S-XL

The Reef Swim Cover-Up is an easy sew for beginners and experienced sewists. The Adult pattern is drafted for sizes S-XL which accommodates US number sizes 0-32. Please use the size key and reference our size chart to determine the appropriate sizing. Download our Reef Swim Bib and Cover-Up for Children here.

We recommend knit fabrics such as terry cloth or a lightweight french terry for this pattern. Reef can also be easily hacked to use gauze or fabric with little stretch as long as knit fabric is used for the neckband.

  • XL: 26-32

    Sewing Instructions:

    Sewing The Basic Cover-Up

Lay the front and back bodice pieces right sides together. Sew the two shoulder seams.

Fold the neckband in half crosswise, right sides together. Sew the short raw edge.

Fold the neckband in half again, with raw edges and wrong sides together so that the seam is inside the fold.

With the raw edges facing up, place the basic neckband inside the neck opening of the body, right sides together.

The raw edges of the neckline and neckband are to be together. Clip or pin in place using the quartering method.

    Sew the complete circle.

*Quartering Method: To quarter the neckline, place a pin at both shoulder seams. Then match the shoulder seams to find the midpoint of the front and back of the neckline. Place a pin at the midpoints. This will evenly distribute the neckband along the neckline and prevent pulling.

    Sewing The Open Front Option

    Preparing the optional ties:

Fold the tie in half lengthwise, with long raw edges and right sides of the fabric together.

Sew the long raw end and one short end. Turn right sides out.

    Repeat for all 4 ties.

Lay the front and back bodice pieces right sides together. Sew the two shoulder seams.

Place both open front neckband pieces on top of each other, right sides together. Sew one short raw edge.

Fold the neckband in half lengthwise, with raw edges and wrong sides together so that the seam is inside the fold.

Place the neckband along the open front neckline, placing the seam at the center of the neckline and evenly pin it around the raw edge.

    Optional ties:

Using the markers on the pattern, place the optional ties on top of the bodice sandwiching the band in between the ties and the bodice.

Clip or pin to hold in place.

Sew along the entire band to attach. Flip the seam inward and topstitch for a clean finish.

*If adding the ties they will sit on the inside.

    Finishing All Versions

Serge or hem the entire raw outer edges of the bodice.

Using the markers on the pattern piece, tack with a straight stitch to close the sides of the cover-up.
